bidding is closed

Description

  • D'Azeglio, Massimo
  • A Wooded Alpine Landscape
  • signed and dated M. D'Azeglio 1831 lower left
  • oil on canvas
  • 121 by 166cm., 47½ by 65½in.

Provenance

Archduke Rainer Joseph of Austria, possibly acquired from the artist (1783 – 1853; Viceroy of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia from 1818 to 1848); thence by descent

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There is some minor undulation at the four far edges and hairline craquelure is visible throughout, notably in the upper half of the composition, along with some surface rubbing. There is a circa 3 by 2 cm hole in the canvas in the lower right corner and a minor dent in the fallen tree trunk in the lower right quadrant. The painting surface might benefit from surface cleaning and restoration. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals a thick layer of residual varnish and no visible sign of restoration. Presented in a gilt frame.
