oval, the Emperor in uniform with orders, signed in monogram: BV, the reverse inscribed: Ferd. I. Imp. Austria / dipinto / da Bagatti-Valsecchi / 1835, 'the back panel painted with a vase of summer flowers, within an ormolu acanthus frame, the loaded stand cast as a languid river god

Overall good condition. The miniatures and the reverse of the gilt-metal mount detached.

Catalogue Note
The Milanese artist Pietro Bagatti (1802-1864) had been adopted by his mother’s second husband Baron Lattanzio Valsecchi in 1824, taking his surname as well. His great interest was in artistic techniques following studies in physics and mathematics at the university of Pavia and studying art in Paris and Geneva. He painted miniatures both on ivory in enamel and experimented also with metals, glass and porcelain, unusual at the time for an Italian artist. Eldest son of Francis II and Maria Anna of Naples and Sicily, Ferdinand (1793-1875), ruled from 1835 until his abdication in 1848. A sufferer from epilepsy, at the time he was considered as feeble-minded and incapable of ruling.
