Description

  • Italian School
  • A Church Interior with a Procession of Soldiers
  • oil on canvas
  • 92 by 73cm., 34 by 28¾in.

Provenance

Maria Raineria Freiin von Waideck, Princess of Campofranco (1872-1936); thence by descent

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There is a minor dent in the upper left quadrant. There are areas of what appears to be degraded varnish in the dark pigments in the upper and left edges. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals a thick layer of uneven varnish which makes the surface quite difficult to read. However, a circa 10cm vertical stroke of retouching is visible in the white cloak of one of the two soldiers in the lower left corner. This painting could benefit from some surface cleaning and minor restoration. Presented in a decorative gilt frame with some losses.
