Description

  • Hero and Leander
  • oil on canvas
  • 54 x 40 cm

Provenance

Probably Emperor Leopold II of Austria (1747–92);
Maria Raineria Freiin von Waideck, Princess of Campofranco (1872–1936);
By descent to the present owner.

Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty, and the varnish discoloured. There are two scuff marks, one along the upper section of the left margin, and one along the upper section of the right margin, and a spot of surface accretion in the rock above and to the left of the latter. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick varnish underneath which spot retouching is visible throughout, as well as fine lines of retouching to reduce the effect of craquelure in the figures lower centre, and the figure in the sky - these are all visible more clearly to the naked eye.
