Catalogue Note
Corot traveled in Italy several times : in 1825, 1834 and 1843. The studies of landscapes executed in situ were then used to paint compositions, once back in Paris. This particular work is typical of the sketches made in plein-air by Corot as soon as he arrived in Italy, in 1825. It is a replica after the painting executed in 1825-26 (private collection, illustrated in Pierre Diéterle, Martin Diéterle and Claire Lebeau, Corot, Cinquième supplément, Paris, 2002, n°9).
