  • bears signature lower right: P Angelis

  • 48.8 x 60.5 cm.; 19 1/4  x 23 7/8  in.

Provenance

With Lewis & Simmons, Paris, by 1929 (when advertised in Gaulois Artistique, vol. 3, 31 March 1929).

Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. There is a horizontal line of faint surface cracking running the width of the canvas across the centre, possibly from an old stretcher mark, as well as further very faint surface cracks across the two masked figures centre right and across the top of the trees upper centre. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some retouchings scattered throughout the composition, most notably a horizontal line measuring circa 4cm above the trees upper centre, small spots scattered throughout the sky and clouds, in the dark pigments of the trees in the centre, in the figures to the right of the central lady, and to the group of figures lower left. In overall good condition. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.
