The canvas is lined, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is clear and even. The network of craquelure is quite pronounced in a few areas, for example in the sky upper right, and along an old horizontal fold which runs the width of the canvas circa 11.5cm. from the upper edge. There are visible retouchings along this fold, as well as scattered throughout the composition, most notably in the background and the floor lower left. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals these, as well as scattered in St Francis' flesh tones, most notably his toes, proper right hand, cheek and forehead. Further retouchings are visible in the skull, St Francis's robes, to the figure in the background, and along the edges. In overall fair condition. Offered in a carved and parcel gilt frame in very good condition.
