Description

  • Studies of hands
  • oil and red chalk on paper, laid on canvas
  • 24 x 37 cm.; 9 1/2  x 14 1/2  in.

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Claude Aguttes, Paris, 19 December 2007, lot 19 (as French School, 18th Century).

Condition

The paper is laid on canvas, which is lined. The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured. The red chalk studies of hands are retained below the varnish. There are a handful of old tears in the paper, one running horizontally from the left margin through thumb into the centre of the composition; another shorter line left of centre from the upper margin, and two small tears in the upper right quadrant. These have all been visibly retouched. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these, and also reveals small, fine lines of retouching in the left index finger and in the wrist of the right hand, as well as to a small loss less than 1cm. squared in the palm of the left hand by the cuff. In overall good condition. Offered in a plain gilt frame with minor losses.
