Condition

The panel is uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is relatively clean but the varnish is rather discoloured. The paint has become translucent over time, particularly evident in the flesh tones of the figures, so the wood grain and some of the underdrawing has become more visible. There are discoloured retouchings throughout the flesh tones to disguise this. These are confirmed by inspection under ultraviolet light, which also reveals a slightly more recent area of retouching in the shadow of Christ’s left side and left arm. In overall fair condition.
