Description

  • Pieter Nason
  • Portrait of a lady
  • signed lower right: PNason (PN in ligature)
  • oil on canvas, in a painted oval
  • 86.2 x 66.7 cm.; 34 x 26 1/4  in.

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Brussels, Palais de Beaux-Arts, 26 November 1974, lot 463;
Thence by descent to the present owner.

Condition

The canvas has been relined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There is a small paint loss to the right of the sitter's head and three, short superficial scratches on her proper right shoulder, and one in the upper right corner (visible in the catalogue illustration). Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the thick varnish, which fluoresces opaquely under ultraviolet light, but reveals an upside-down T-shaped area of old restoration in the sitter's chest, the longest part of which measures no more than 6 cm. The painting otherwise appears to be in very good condition, and would benefit greatly from cleaning.
