Condition

The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The oak panel has a vertical joint, reinforced to the reverse. The panel is stable with slight undulation across the surface. Flaked loss to the dark blue leaf , centre right, and the background, upper right, is visible. There is a small loss to the blue iris. Under U-V light a minor scattering of retouchings can be seen. Overall, the paint is well preserved with many fine details in good original condition. Removal of the discoloured varnish layer would improve tonality.
