  • 36½in by 72½in

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 10 April 1991, lot 75.

Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. There is a horizontal line where the paint is starting to lift with tiny spots of associated paint loss which runs the width of the canvas approx. 1cm. from the lower edge, possibly as a result of an old fold. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouchings in his sleeves and scattered in the lower part of his jacket and inner coat, as well as to his temple, around his eye and small spots in his chin and hair, and scattered in the background. In overall good condition. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame with some woodworm holes.

This portrait is most likely by Thomas Worlidge.
