Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 14 November 1990, lot 72.

Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is slightly discoloured. The paint is slightly worn in the black horse. Some retouchings along the left edge are visible to the naked eye. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals these, as well as retouchings scattered along the other edges and in the clouds upper right, as well as fine lines in the black horse and his rider's costume and leg. There are further fine lines in the bay horse, most notably it's legs, tail, neck and mane, and in his rider's hat, jacket and boot, but the work otherwise appears in very good condition. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame with minor losses.
