Description

  • German School, 16th century
  • Predella panel depicting a kneeling donor with his wife and their ten children
  • oil on panel, unframed
  • 38.5 x 98 cm.; 15 1/8  x 38 5/8  in.

Condition

The panel is made up of a single plank, and has three inset vertical batons on the reverse, probably to account for two repaired horizontal splits which are visible from the reverse, one in the upper part of the left edge, and the other in the upper part of the right edge, both measuring circa 12cm. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. There are some visible retouchings, most notably along the aforementioned repaired splits, and along horizontal, uneven lines caused by the panel grain, where some faint paint loss is also visible. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals these, as well as scattered throughout the furthest right figure's headdress and scarf, scattered throughout all the right-hand side kneeling figures' clothes and faces, in the donor's face, arm and thigh, in the furthest left boys' albs, and scattered throughout the background and floor, most notably along the centre of the lower edge. In overall fine condition.
