Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. The colours appear bright and the details, much of the impasto of which is well-preserved, remain very well intact. The painting is in overall very good condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals very minimal retouching - a few scattered spots in the background and some fine, carefully executed lines of retouching in the sitter’s sleeve and forehead, to reduce the appearance of craquelure. The painting does not require further attention and is ready to hang in its elaborate frame.
