Traditionally believed to have been acquired directly from Francesco Guardi in Venice by Lord Pembroke, and thence to have passed by descent to his granddaughter, Princess Sayn Wittgenstein, Bavaria (according to the Norwich exhibition catalogue);
With Julius Böhler, Munich, acquired from the above in 1924;
Fritz B E Gutmann (1886–1994), acquired from the above in 1924 and removed from Bosbeek, Heemstede after the Nazi occupation of Holland in 1940;

Condition
Both panels are cradled, flat and stable. Both paint surfaces are relatively clean and both varnishes are discoloured. The paint surface in the sky of the view of the lagoon appears slightly worn, and both have a few visible scattered retouchings along what appear to be old vertical surface scuffs. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals these scattered retouchings of which there are a greater number in the view of the lagoon. In overall fairly good condition. Both offered in carved gilt wood frames with minor chips.
