Condition

Anne Marie - the canvas is lined, the paint surface is also clean and the varnish is clear and even. Again, the image appears bright and in no need of any further intervention. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals small retouchings in the sitter’s face and chest, and in the upper border of her dress. There are a few scattered spot retouchings in the background, and the painting is in overall good condition. Maria Luisa - the canvas is lined, the paint surface is fairly clean, and the varnish is clear and even. The image appears bright, without a need for any further intervention. There is some evidence of wear in the darker pigments. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals restoration to disguise these areas of wear in the sitter’s hair and in the background, as well as a diagonal line of retouching, approx. 20cm. long, on the left-hand side, and some horizontal lines in the background on the right. There are also lines of restoration through her chest, neck, chin and left cheek. These have been carried out sensitively without detracting from the legibility of the image.
