Description

  • French School, early 17th Century
  • Portrait of a man holding a flute
  • oil on canvas
  • 63.4 x 49.1 cm.; 25 x 19 1/4  in.

Condition

The canvas has a very firm relining. The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish discoloured. There is a large 18 x 21 cm. L-shaped repaired tear in the sitters shoulder. Inspection under ultra violet light is impeded by the opaque varnish but appears to reveal little other intervention save for a handful of spot re-touchings in the man's face and scattered around the aforementioned tear. Offered in a Dutch style ebonised wood frame with ripple decoration and a gilt sight edge, some minor losses.
