Provenance

The Churchwardens of the Parish of Oakford, Devon;
By whom sold, London, Christie's, 9 June 1972, lot 97, to Burns;
Anonymous posthumous sale ('Sold by Order of the Executors of a Deceased Estate'), London, Phillips, 9 December 1986, lot 1;
With Noortman Master Paintings, Maastricht, 1987 (when advertised in Weltkunst, vol. 57, no. 2, 1 June 1987).

Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is fairly dirty and the varnish slightly discoloured. There is a vertical surface scratch with associated paint loss starting along the centre of the lower margin, approx. 10 cm. long. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals fine lines of retouching scattered in the figures’ flesh tones, mostly to reduce the appearance of craquelure - this is rather extensive in the Virgin’s proper right hand, and throughout Christ. There are concentrated areas of retouching in the face of the figure holding the red hat, and the neck of the man to his left, and further spots scattered throughout. The Virgin’s hair and most of her proper right sleeve have been strengthened. None of these impede the legibility of the image, which is ready to hang. Offered in a carved and parcel gilt frame.
