Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty, and the varnish has darkened, and is shiny and uneven. The painting is in overall good condition which could improve significantly with cleaning. There are several areas in the sky and in the waves which have become discoloured, either through the degradation of varnish or old wash retouching - these areas are not particularly discernible under ultraviolet light. What are revealed however are scattered spot retouchings in the cliffs on the right, in the lower right-hand corner, and in the waves just to the left of centre. There is also old retouching to a handful of very small losses in the sky around the ship’s mast, and in the upper left corner. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame.
