Description
- Dogs guarding spoils from the hunt
- oil on canvas
- 149.5 x 217.4 cm.; 58 7/8 x 85 5/8 in.
Provenance
In the possession of a Catholic institution for the last several decades.
Condition
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty, and the varnish is discoloured. There is a vertical fold or seam running down the centre of the composition, as well as horizontal stretcher marks, which are most notable in the centre of the composition where there are tiny spots of associated paint loss. Old discoloured retouchings are visible throughout, most notably in the sky centre left, and in the darker pigments upper right. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a very thick varnish, making it difficult to discern much else. In overall fair condition. Offered in a parcel gilt frame.
