Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty, and the varnish slightly discoloured. The surface appears rather flat in areas, for example in the upper left sky, where the dark ground has also become visible. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick varnish underneath which retouchings are visible: in the upper left sky, further spots and fine lines scattered throughout, along all four edges, and two more concentrated spots, one below the donkey's head lower centre, and one below the horse's head lower left. In overall fairly good condition. Offered in a carved and gesso gilt frame.
