The panel is cradled, flat and stable, and has probably been reduced. The paint surface is quite dirty and the varnish discoloured. There is frame abrasion along all four edges, with associated visible retouching. There is some flaking in the paint surface along the central and upper left margin, with some resulting spots of paint loss. There are two further spots of paint loss along the lower right margin, and a fine line of surface accretion in the sitter's cuff on the left. Old, discoloured retouching is visible scattered throughout, most notably in the sitter's face along the vertical panel grain, and to reduce the appearance of craquelure. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick, streaky varnish which fluoresces opaque, underneath which some of the aforementioned retouchings are visible, but assessment of the condition appears easier with the naked eye. In overall fair condition. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame with losses.
