Description

  • The Holy Family
  • oil on panel
  • 92.2 x 58.2 cm.; 36 1/4  x 22 7/8  in.

Condition

The panel is cradled, very slightly bowed, and stable. There are vertical surface cracks scattered throughout the panel, most notably one which runs the height of the panel through the centre, in Joseph's red robe, and in the background upper left; all these have associated visible retouching. The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms all these as well as further spots scattered throughout, with the more concentrated spot in Her forehead, and more recent retouchings in the infant Baptist's halo, and the Madonna and Joseph's sleeves. None of these impede the legibility of the image and the painting is ready to hang. Offered in a carved and parcel gilt frame.
