Literature

Y. Primarosa, Ottavio Leoni (1578–1630) Eccellente miniator di ritratti: catalogo ragionato dei disegni e dei dipinti, Rome 2017, p. 123, cat. no. 31, reproduced in colour fig. 87.

Condition

The copper plate is flat and stable, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is clear and even. In raking light, a handful of tiny retouchings on the right-hand side of his coat just below his collar are visible, as is a tiny diagonal surface scratch 0.5 cm. long in his hair upper right. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these, and reveals a handful of tiny retouchings around the sitter's eyes, between his mouth and nose, and in his neck, as well as along the lower left margin. None of these is in any way distracting and the painting is in very good overall condition. Offered in a plain stained wood frame with some losses.
