Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear but slightly uneven. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals sensitively executed retouchings in the saint's forehead, nose and cheeks, scattered in his hands and blue robe, and in the background upper left and around the silhouette of his hand. In overall good condition. Offered in a carved and plaster gilt wood frame.

Sandro Bellesi (see Literature) dates this Saint George to the early 1640s and notes its similarities with Dandini's canvas of a similar date depicting the Archangel Michael in the collection at the Cassa di Risparmio, Prato.1 1 See Bellesi 1996, p. 84, cat. no. 31, reproduced.
