  • inscribed on the reverse: HENDRIK.v. MELISSANT./ FLORISZOON OBIT AO 1520/ BEG: TE SCHIEDAM EN ZUSTER
  • oil on oak panel, charged with an arms of the Melissant family
  • 24 x 43 cm.; 9 1/2  x 16 7/8  in.

Condition

The panel is uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is dirty, and the varnish is rather discoloured. There is a vertical, superficial surface scratch running down the right-hand margin, a small, cm. long scratch between their heads, and a couple of very small scuffs to the surface in the man's collar and in the woman's proper left eyelid. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the thick milky varnish beneath which it is possible to discern scattered, pin prick retouchings but no major intervention. In overall good condition. Offered in a plain, ebonised wood frame in good condition.
