woven with figure of Christ on the cross, flanked by figures of the Virgin Mary, St. Andrew, John the Evangelist and St. Catherine; reduced in size

Condition

Overall measurements: 144cm across the top, 144cm across the bottom, 82.5cm along the left side, 82.5cm along the right side. Reduced in height, along the lower edge. There is reweaving along the complete width of the lower edge. There is later reweaving to the outer selvedges, inner yellow and black banding, on left and right vertical edges (as visible on close inspection and in the high resolution photograph). There are some small areas of reweaving in other areas, and to the blue of eyes of faces (otherwise faded and they are for definition), and some within letters of inscription. There are some very small old holes. Some small areas of weaving in the fringing edge underneath the inscription. Lined in twill woven later textile, with small hoops attached. Recommend Velcro added for hanging purposes in the future. Bright saturated colours. Evocative tapestry of the period, with some well executed technique in details, such as the blood, and hachure (shading) generally.
