Description

  • Relief with Saint Eustace
  • oak
  • 40.5 by 32cm., 16 by 12 5/8 in.

Condition

Overall, the condition of the wood is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is some stable splitting to the wood, consistent with the material, including some slightly open, but stable splits to the top of the relief at the centre, to the base at the edge, and to the horse's proper left front and hind leg. There are a few small losses, mostly due to past worming, including to the dog's tail, to the tips of the horse's ears and to the top of the relief where there appear to be losses to the vegetation. There is some gesso to the reverse at the bottom, possibly applied to stabilise splits, and there are some filled holes. There are remnants of old labels to the underside. There is a modern metal hook at the back for mounting.
