Catalogue Note

Few albarelli of this type with lustred decoration over a blue glaze appear to be recorded in the literature. Ray, op. cit., illustrates two examples in the collection of the V&A museum, London, where they are attributed to Manises, Valencia, mus. nos. C.70-1931 and C.50-1910, the latter similarly decorated with ascending bands of lustred leaves. An albarello of similar decoration was sold at Sotheby's London, 30th April 2003, lot 65; the same sale included an interesting blue-glazed albarello without lustred decoration, lot 67. It is uncertain where such pieces as this were made; Ray writes that such albarelli may have been produced in Catalonia by immigrant Valencian potters.
