Condition

The canvas is lined. The painting shows an elegant sitter, with some of the details slightly flattened. Right above the head of the sitter there appears to be a circular dent with some tiny dots of associated loss on the background. Inspection under UV shows scattered spots of retouches here and there on the background, around the head of the figure that extends down to her shoulder and arms, with a more concentrated area running on the right side that extends to the shadows on her face. Further scattered spots of retouches and inpainting are on the face and white collar. Offered in a lightly painted and carved giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note

This painting appears to be from 1650/60 based on the falling collar, or so called rabat collar, the small black hat, and the sitter's hairstyle. We are grateful to Sabine Craft-Giepmanse, Curator at the RKD-Netherlands Institute of Art History, for her assistance with the cataloguing of the present lot on the basis of photographs.
