Catalogue Note

This picturesque view of Arnhem depicts the Grote Kerk and Saint Walburgskerk.  Van Goyen's drawing is attractively composed with the inclusion of a foliage laden tree at the left foreground, where he employs a darker shade of chalk, creating the perfect repoussoir effect, cleverly leading the eye into the landscape.  On the horizon, Van Goyen's turrets and steeples of the churches of Arnhem emerge, executed in softer tones.
