John Harthan, Esq., librarian of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; sale, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 5 November 2002, lot 24
Chalk or charcoal drawings by Quellinus are rare, but there is a representation of the Madonna and Child, at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University (inv. 1976.45), which is similar to this in terms of media and technique.
Hinge mounted in two places along the upper edge to a modern cream mount. The drawing remains in superb condition throughout, with only a small light brown stain to the centre of the right edge. The black chalk medium remains remarkably fresh and vibrant throughout and the sheet retains much of its original blue color. Sold unframed. In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above.
