De Boissieu was a prolific printmaker, producing numerous reproductive engravings, predominantly after works by 17
th century Dutch masters, and also a number of original, freely executed etchings. He was also a fine draughtsman and most of his surviving drawings are highly atmospheric landscapes.
The present study of a group of trees is wonderfully expressive and free and can be stylistically compared to another drawing, The Trunk of a blasted Tree, sold at Christie’s in 1996.1
