Catalogue Note

This is part of a series of drawings of the same theme with variations, which include God the Father, Christ and the Holy Spirit. They are numbered and Byam Shaw wrote that he knew of numbers as high as 144.1  They are generally signed and according to Byam Shaw must have been drawn over a span of twenty-eight years.  The composition has something in common with Giambattista's treatment of the theme in his ceiling fresco in the church of the Pietà, Venice, unveiled in 1755, on which Domenico collaborated.Giandomenico, according to Byam Shaw, returned to the same subject in his Apotheosis of S. Leo IX, painted for the church of San Lio, Venice.3 1.  J. Byam Shaw, The Drawings of Domenico Tiepolo, London 1962, p. 32
