Catalogue Note
We are grateful to Edoardo Testori for suggesting that the present study is most probably preparatory for the draped cloth around the knee of the seated Virgin in Tanzio's painting, The Flight into Egypt (1627-28), now in the Houston Museum of Fine Arts (fig. 1). It is stylistically closely related to another drapery study, executed in the same distinctive combination of media, which is also preparatory for the Virgin's drapery in that painting. Both sheets are part of a group, probably originating from an album and sharing the same provenance, which was first published by Ferro in 2009 (see Literature). See also lot 2 above.
