Catalogue Note

This attractive sheet of figure studies is typical of Poccetti's working drawings where there is often an ensemble of sketches on one page, sometimes oriented in different directions, as is the case with this example. Here, the majority of the sheet is occupied by a standing figure of a man with his hand outstretched and around him are various subsidiary drawings; a group of figures to the lower right, a head and bust study of a man, lower left  and a further head study of a man, upper left.

It has not been possible to find a secure link with these sketches and a painted commission by Poccetti but there is no doubt that these working sheets were certainly preparatory for his paintings and frescoes.  However, it is possible that the two head studies on the left side of the sheet may relate to clerical figures in Poccetti's fresco cycle, The Life and death of Saint Bruno in the Certosa di Galluzzo,Florence and the group of figures to the lower right might be associated with some of the figures in his frescoed ceiling, The Triumph of the Trinity, at the same monastery.2
