Catalogue Note

As Robert-Jan te Rijdt has very kindly informed us, this is de Wit's first sketch for the composition of a painted wall hanging dating from 1753, right at the end of the artist's life, one of a pair that was sold at auction in London, in 1952.1 A finished drawing of the composition was with Galerie Monique Martel, in Brussels, in 2009. The subject is Ceres with a woman and a putto who are carrying grain and the fruits of summer - an Allegory of Summer.
