Catalogue Note

In terms of composition, this impressive drawing can certainly be compared with the paintings of Adriaen van Stalbemt, and in the 2010 sale catalogue the possibility that the initials with which it is signed were his was considered, but it was not possible to find any securely attributable drawings by the artist with which this sheet could be compared.  The drawing will, however, be included as an autograph work by the artist in Dr. Klaus Ertz's forthcoming monograph.  Stalbemt was a talented landscape artist who was strongly influenced by Roelandt Savery, and who is also recorded as having worked in England for a time, probably during the 1630s.
