Condition

Neither work has been examined out of their respective frames. They both appear to be laid down on board, which then appears to have been laid down on to a wooden backing. They are both generally in good condition, with some rubbing of the surface and abrasions to the extremities in both sheets. There is some additional staining and losses to the sky of the Villa Madama watercolour. Overall the medium remains strong throughout. Both sold in gilt French Empire frames.

Catalogue Note

Thibault, known as an architect and a landscape artist, studied at the French Academy in Rome from 1780.  As at least one of the present works dates from significantly later in the artist's career, one can safely assume that it was drawn on a later visit to the city.
