Catalogue Note

The Château of Blandy-les-Tours is near Vaux-le-Vicomte, in the Seine et Marne region of France.  It was a 13th-century castle extensively fortified in the 14th century and rebuilt again in the 16th.  In the early 18th century it changed hands and the new owner dismantled it and turned it into a farm.  At the time Wille made this drawing, it had been bought by the Duc de Choiseul-Praslin, but was clearly still in a state of abandonment.  It has now been extensively restored.

Another similar view of the Château, similarly inscribed and dated by the artist, though executed in red chalk and wash, was sold in these rooms on 30 January 2013, lot 264.
