Condition

Window mounted to a modern mount. The sheet has fractionally discoloured and there is evidence of minor foxing and some small stains throughout. There is an old repaired tear to the upper half of the right edge and some small nicks to the extremities. The pen and brown in medium remains in predominantly good condition throughout, with the image strong. Sold in a modern giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note

This drawing is closely related to the portrait portion of the frontispiece to the definitive edition of Ariosto's Orlando Furioso, published in Ferrara by Francesco Rossi in 1532.  The authorship of this woodcut, which is based on a design by Titian, is not entirely clear:  its elaborate decorative border bears the signature of Francesco da Nanto, but it seems that this border actually predates the portrait itself, which was engraved by another hand and inserted somewhat later.1  1.
