oil on canvas This intimate depiction of Joseph cradling the lively Christ Child is painted in the spirit of the Venetian master of the early 18th century, Jacopo Amigoni. Amigoni travelled extensively throughout his lifetime: he became well-known as a pioneer of the Venetian Rococo Style and his works were much sought after in the palaces of Germany, England and latterly Spain, where he died in 1752 having served several years as the court painter to King Ferdinand VI of Spain. Amigoni's peripatetic career fostered the development of an international decorative style.

Condition

All paintings available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 5 - 7 and 10 – 13 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment. The canvas is lined, the paint surface is very dirty and the varnish very discoloured. There are visible stretcher marks running along all four sides. The canvas is buckled slightly in the upper right corner, and all four margins show signs of frame abrasion and are heavily restored. Other discoloured retouching is visible in an area of the background upper left, measuring 14.5 x 6.5 cm., to the aforementioned stretcher marks, in Joseph's hand, and scattered in the flesh tones of the child. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these.
