Description

  • After Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn
  • Self portrait
  • Unframed: 64.5 x 53.9 cm.; 25 3/8 x 21 1/4 in.
oil on canvas, unframed A copy after the self-portrait of 1639 attributed to Rembrandt in the collection of the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 1746).1 Rembrandt painted more self portraits than any other artist of the 17th century. He produced more than 90 portraits of himself that date from the outset of his career in the 1620s to the year of his death in 1669, providing us with a visual autobiography that is almost entirely unprecedented in the history of western art. 1 https://rkd.nl/explore/images/30465

Condition

All paintings available to view at the Sotheby’s Greenford Park warehouse, 5 - 7 and 10 – 13 September (10 - 4pm), by appointment. The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There are pin prick losses in his hair, and in the background around his hat, as well as retouchings probably to further losses scattered throughout the lower part of his coat, and to a vertical line in the upper right corner measuring 6 cm. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the thick, milky varnish but reveals only more recent retouchings along the lower margin.
