Description

  • Portrait of Guido Reni (1575–1642)
  • Card: 28.6 x 21 cm.; 11 1/4 x 8 1/4 in. Panel: 30.6 x 21.8 cm.; 12 x 8 1/2 in.
oil on card laid on pine panel, unframed The present work is a copy after Simone Cantarini's portrait of Guido Reni of 'circa' 1635–36, today in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna (inv. no. 340).1 Cantarini entered Reni's studio in 1635, and became one of his most eminent pupils. His bold and ambitious nature, and his growing awareness of his own potential, however, soon led him to reject the subordinate position of disciple, and their relationship developed into full-blooded rivalry, so that in 1637 they abandoned any contact.  1 http://pinacotecabologna.beniculturali.it/it/content_page/38-sala-24/79-ritratto-di-guido-reni.html
