Condition

Slight discolouration around the edges of the sheet. Tiny areas of abrasion along the left margin. There are two small circular water stains, one below the signature and the other upper right. Media remains strong and vibrant.

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Pascal Zuber for kindly informing us that this drawing is preparatory for the lithograph La partie de piquet and will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Boilly's works that he and Etienne Breton are preparing. The composition is also known through a watercolour, dated 1821, sold in 19881 and an oil painting that was previously on the French art market in the same year.2
