Condition

Laid down. The sheet has suffered in terms of its condition. There are holes and tears in various places where the ink has sunk and eaten into the paper, these areas have then been made up/filled in.The upper left corner is torn and there is a small tear at the upper right corner and another tear at the right margin Light scattered brown stains throughout the sheet. Despite these condition issues the image is still relatively strong.

Catalogue Note

We have not been able to connect this sheet with any known painting by Guercino, but stylistically it can be dated to the early 1620s.  The intricate fluency of the pen work shows a clear debt to the style of Lodovico Carracci, who was such an inspiration to the Guercino during his early career.
