Catalogue Note

This drawing has an interesting provenance. Sir Arthur John Evans was a pioneering archaeologist who discovered the Minoan civilisation and later became Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. He gave the work to his half-sister Dame Dr. Joan Evans, a distinguished and much published art historian.
