Catalogue Note

The simplification of forms that characterizes this large head study is very typical of the late drawings of Cavalier d'Arpino, and Marco Simone Bolzoni has kindly suggested a dating to the second half of 1630s.  The indication of a large halo behind the head, and possibly of a book in the lower light corner, suggest that the drawing must have been made as a study for the figure of a Saint or Evangelist.
