Catalogue Note
This superb portrait, which survives in very fine condition, was drawn by Hamilton in 1775, a year in which he is known to have lived at St Martin's Lane, London. Irish by birth, he had been living in the English capital since 1764. In 1776, he returned home, before moving to Italy with his wife and young daughter in 1782. The family were to remain there for the next thirteen years and Hugh enjoyed much popularity amongst Grand Tourists.
